The view
A line, not a wall
Lots on the north and east sides of Flagstaff — Fort Valley, Doney Park, Timberline, and the in-town streets that face the mountain — are bought for the Peaks. A 6-foot privacy fence around one of them does exactly what it is designed to do: it makes the mountain go away from the ground floor. Nobody on the standard fence-material comparison charts mentions this, because the charts were written for Phoenix subdivisions where there is nothing behind the fence to see.
An open-picket metal fence at the same 6 feet reads as a line the eye looks through. It still keeps dogs in, keeps elk mostly out, and marks the property; it does not delete the reason the lot cost what it cost. That is the whole case for iron and aluminum here, and it is why this page treats them as a view-preservation decision first and a material decision second.
The trade is privacy. If a neighbor's window is the problem rather than the mountain, the usual compromise is a short privacy section on that one run and open metal on the rest — which also happens to be how the City's front-setback height rules push a layout anyway.
Snow, wind, heave
The climate case, which is nearly as strong
Flagstaff averages about 108 inches of snow a year, and the City's building criteria use a 60 psf ground snow load and a 115 mph ultimate design wind speed. A solid privacy panel has to be engineered for both. Open pickets carry no snow and pass wind, so the two forces that push a wood or vinyl quote toward heavier posts and 6-foot spacing mostly disappear. Panels can span 8 feet on standard posts.
What is left is the footing. The City sets the frost line at 30 inches; Coconino County lists the same 30 inches for every elevation from 5,700 ft up. A metal post set shallower than that heaves like any other, and because iron panels are rigid, one heaved post racks the panels on both sides of it. Ask for depth on the quote.
The one winter vulnerability is the bottom rail: a plow berm or a snow blower thrown against it bends it, and a bent rail on a welded steel panel is a welding repair — nationally $30–$60 per linear foot. Keep the fence a plow-width off the driveway, and keep the bottom rail a few inches above grade so snow is not sitting against the coating all winter.

Gates are the wild card on a metal fence — a driveway gate, and especially an automated one, is priced as its own project, not by the foot. Ask for it as a separate line item with the operator, hardware, and any electrical work broken out.
Steel vs. aluminum
What "wrought iron" actually means on a quote
Almost nothing sold as wrought iron today is wrought; it is welded tubular steel, or powder-coated aluminum built to look like it. The difference matters here:
- Steel is stronger and heavier, the choice for security, for a gate that will be slammed, and for a panel a plow berm might lean on. It rusts wherever the coating fails, and at this elevation the coating is attacked by summer UV and by snow sitting against the bottom rail all winter. Specify factory powder coat over galvanized steel, not a site-painted finish, and plan to touch up chips.
- Aluminum does not rust, weighs a third as much, and costs less ($30–$60 per foot at 2026 Arizona rates for ornamental metal versus $35–$70 for steel). It dents and bends where steel would hold. For a pure view fence with no security role it is usually the better buy.
Either way, ask for the picket spacing, the rail count (three rails on a 6-ft panel), the post size, and the coating system in writing.

Heights, the permit, and the license
City of Flagstaff
Minor improvement permit required for all fences ($80 application fee). The residential height table allows a decorative wrought iron horse corral fence at 5 ft in the front setback — 3 ft for a solid fence, 4 ft for vinyl-coated chain link — and 6 ft at sides and rear. The word "decorative" is the City's; ask the planner how a given panel design reads before ordering.
Unincorporated Coconino County
No building permit up to 7 ft. Under the 2026 Zoning Ordinance (§4.6) a fence that is at least 50 percent transparent may go to 6 ft in a front or street-side setback; open metal pickets qualify. Over 6 ft anywhere needs a variance or administrative adjustment.
